SJ Girls' Tennis

Our goal this year as a tennis team is to get all, or majority, of varsity to state and to take region. We have been working really hard and have awesome coaches who are pushing us to do our best, but also making sure we have fun.

The first match of the season was a home game against Manti on Thursday the 23rd. Everyone played really well against Manti, but sadly no one came out with the win. We congratulate the girls on being good sports and we are happy to say that there was good sportsmanship from the opponents as well.

Second match of the season led the girls to Moab to play Grand and Emery on Friday the 24th.. Everyone played good against Moab. Jade Warren, first singles, was the only varsity player to win. There was a lot of good sportsmanship and everyone had a lot of fun.
The matches against Emery had the same outcome. Our first singles, Jade,  was the only varsity player to win. It was really hot and a lot of girls got sunburned, but they had a lot of fun at their first away meet.

Interview with Collette Lyman(head coach)

When asked what the differences from this year and last, she says,
“We lost some great seniors last year and only have 3 returning varsity players led by, 1st singles, Jade Warren. We have a big group of freshmen this year that are learning fast and will be the future of our team.” To add to the differences, they have new assistant coaches this year, Cierra Walker, Mary Royer and Jennifer Warren.
Coach Lyman says goals for the season are “...for every girl to do their best and earn a state berth.” Coach Lyman believes the way to do that is for the girls to improve on their back hands, their serves, and their aggressive net play.
Region 15 is super competitive with Grand, Emery, North Sanpete, Manti, Richfield, South Sevier and our own San Juan girls all competing for a place at region to move on and qualify for state. So far the team has been doing good and they are improving lots. 1st singles, Jade Warren, beat Grand and Emery. 2nd singles, Kaitlyn Montella, lost in some very close matches. 3rd singles, Brinli Bowring, beat Emery. 1st doubles, Hayley and Tyler Shumway, are new to doubles and are looking for their first varsity win. 2nd doubles, Jordyn Kartchner and Kelsey Pugh, are brand new to doubles as well and are really improving each match.
